To export ChatGPT to Claude, move three things separately. Memory goes through Claude's built-in import (**Settings → Your Claude → Start import**). The chats you still need go in as files you upload to a Claude project. Each ChatGPT project is rebuilt as a Claude project. Claude can't import ChatGPT chat history, so your old conversations won't appear in Claude's sidebar, but Claude can read them as files and carry on from there.

This guide is about your own ChatGPT account and the chats and projects you can open in it. Menus, limits and plan details come from OpenAI's and Anthropic's help pages as checked on 30 October 2026.

**Short answer**

- Claude can't import chat history from another AI. ChatGPT chats move as files Claude reads, not as conversations in your sidebar.
- Memory has a real import: ask ChatGPT for everything it remembers using Anthropic's prompt, then paste it into Claude's Start import box.
- ChatGPT's data export can take up to 7 days, its link expires after 24 hours, and the chats come as conversations.json (numbered files for large exports).
- Upload only the chats you need. A whole export is one dense file; a free converter like convoviz splits it into one Markdown file per chat.
- A ChatGPT project becomes a Claude project: copy the instructions by hand, download the files from the project's sources, and upload both.

## Can you export ChatGPT to Claude?

Partly. Anthropic's getting-started page says it's ["not possible to import conversation history from another AI provider into Claude at this time"](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/8114491-get-started-with-claude). There's no button that turns your ChatGPT sidebar into a Claude one.

Everything else has a route:

![Table showing where each part of ChatGPT goes in Claude: memory and custom instructions go through Claude's memory import, chats become files Claude reads as reference, the data export ZIP gives conversations.json after unzipping, project instructions are copied by hand into a Claude project, project files become project knowledge limited to 30 MB a file, and custom GPTs, apps and shared projects don't move at all](https://claudeprojectdownloader.com/img/cpd/cpd-chatgpt-to-claude-map.png)

*What moves where. Checked against help.openai.com and support.claude.com on 2026-10-30.*

Start with memory. It takes a minute, and it changes how Claude answers from your first chat. Then move the chats and projects you're still working on. Old one-off questions rarely need to move at all.

## Move your ChatGPT memory to Claude

Anthropic's [memory import guide](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/12123587-import-and-export-your-memory-from-claude) says memory import works on Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise, on the web and in Claude Desktop.

1. **Copy Anthropic's prompt.** In Claude, go to **Settings → Your Claude** and click **Start import**. In the older settings layout it's **Settings → Memory**. The import box shows the prompt to use. It asks the other assistant to list every memory it has stored about you, verbatim, in one code block, along with the instructions you've given it about how to respond.
2. **Run it in ChatGPT.** Paste the prompt into a new ChatGPT chat. Read the answer before you copy it, and cut anything you'd rather not put in a second service.
3. **Paste it into Claude.** Back in the import box, paste the text and click **Add to memory**. Claude splits it into separate memory entries that you can review in the memory panel.
4. **Check what it kept.** Click **See what Claude learned about you**, or ask Claude what it remembers. Add anything missing through **Manage** next to Your memory.

Three things to know. Anthropic calls memory import experimental, and says Claude may not always take in everything you import. Claude's memory focuses on work, so it may drop personal details that have nothing to do with your work. And if you see Memory under **Settings → Capabilities**, you're on the legacy memory experience: the import works the same way, but new memories can take up to 24 hours to appear.

Your ChatGPT custom instructions belong in the same import. Copy them from **Settings → Personalization** in ChatGPT and add them to the text you paste, since the prompt asks for instructions anyway.

## How to export ChatGPT chats to Claude

### 1. Get the chats out of ChatGPT

Pick the route that matches how many chats you need:

- **A few chats:** the open-source [ChatGPT Exporter](https://github.com/pionxzh/chatgpt-exporter) userscript (MIT licence, runs in Tampermonkey) saves the chat you're looking at as Markdown, HTML or JSON. Its **Export All** option saves many at once.
- **Everything:** in ChatGPT, open **Settings → Data controls**, select **Export**, then **Confirm export**. OpenAI's [export guide](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/7260999-how-do-i-export-my-chatgpt-history-and-data) says the email can take up to 7 days to arrive and the download link expires 24 hours after you get it, so download it as soon as it lands. Chats you've already deleted aren't in it.

Self-service export works on Free, Go, Plus and Pro. On a ChatGPT Business or Enterprise workspace it isn't available, and OpenAI says to ask your workspace owner.

### 2. Turn the export into files Claude can use

Unzip the export first. Claude's [file upload page](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/8241126-uploading-files-to-claude) lists PDF, DOCX, TXT, HTML and JSON among the files it reads, and doesn't list ZIP. Inside, OpenAI says the chats are in `conversations.json`, or in numbered conversation JSON files if your export is large ([transfer guide](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/9106926-transfer-exported-conversations-between-chatgpt-accounts)).

That JSON holds every chat in one dense file, so don't upload it as is. Three better options:

- **Convert it.** The free, open-source [convoviz](https://github.com/mohamed-chs/convoviz) runs on your computer and turns the export ZIP into one Markdown file per chat. Then you pick the files you want.
- **Pick by hand.** Use ChatGPT Exporter on the handful of chats that matter, and skip the bulk export.
- **Summarise.** For a long project, a handoff note is often more useful than the transcript (see below).

### 3. Upload them to a Claude project

In Claude, go to **Projects** and click **New Project**. Free accounts can create up to five projects, per Anthropic's [projects help page](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/9519177-how-can-i-create-and-manage-projects). Add the chat files to the project's files, and every chat in that project can draw on them. For a one-off, attach the file to a single chat instead.

Then tell Claude what to do with it:

> This is a conversation I had in ChatGPT. Read it, summarise what we decided and what's still open, then we'll continue from the last message.

Limits that matter here: a project file can be up to 30 MB, and the files' total content has to fit within Claude's context window. A chat upload can be up to 500 MB, 20 files per chat. On paid plans, Claude switches to [searching a large project's files](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/11473015-retrieval-augmented-generation-rag-for-projects) instead of reading them all at once. Name the chat you mean in your question so the search finds it.

### Or bring a handoff note instead

If Claude only needs to know where the work stands, ask ChatGPT for a summary before you leave:

> Write a handoff note so I can continue this in another assistant. Include the goal, what we decided and why, constraints, the current draft or code in full, open questions and the next step.

Check it against the chat before you use it. Summaries can drop exact wording, numbers or code, so upload the full transcript too when those matter.

## Export ChatGPT projects to Claude

ChatGPT projects and Claude projects work in a similar way: instructions, files and chats in one place. Moving one is a rebuild.

1. **Copy the instructions.** In ChatGPT, open the project's **•••** menu, choose **Project settings**, and copy the instructions into a text file. Copy them by hand rather than counting on the data export to include them.
2. **Download the files.** OpenAI's [Projects guide](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/10169521-projects-in-chatgpt) says you can open each file from the project's sources list to preview, download or delete it. Download each one you still need.
3. **Export the project's chats.** Use the steps above, and keep only the chats that hold decisions.
4. **Build the Claude project.** Create a new project in Claude, paste the instructions into the project's instructions, and upload the files and chats.
5. **Test it.** Ask a question only one of the files can answer, and one that depends on the instructions. If both answers are right, the move worked.

A shared ChatGPT project moves the same way, but its collaborators don't come with it. Claude shares projects only inside a Team or Enterprise organization, per Anthropic's [project sharing page](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/9519189-project-visibility-and-sharing). On a personal plan, send collaborators the files so each of them can build their own copy.

Custom GPTs don't move either. OpenAI plans to retire them on 11 December 2026 ([retirement FAQ](https://help.openai.com/articles/20001519)). A GPT's instructions and knowledge files make a good Claude project, so rebuild it the same way.

## See what your imported files cost in Claude

Months of ChatGPT transcripts add up fast. If Claude says **Project knowledge exceeds maximum. Remove files to continue**, the files no longer fit; [the guide to that error](https://claudeprojectdownloader.com/blog/claude-project-knowledge-exceeds-maximum) explains the limit and what to trim.

[Claude Project Downloader](https://claudeprojectdownloader.com/) helps on the Claude side. It doesn't read ChatGPT, and it only works with projects you can open on claude.ai. Its side panel has a **What's filling this project** card that lists each file's token count, using the numbers Claude reports, with the instructions shown separately. A huge transcript stands out at once. Tick it, click **Back up checked (ZIP)** to keep a copy, then **Remove in Claude…** ticks the same files in Claude's own Context panel. Nothing is deleted until you press Claude's delete button.

Once the new project works, **Download Entire Project** saves it as one ZIP with `instructions.md`, the knowledge files and every chat in the format you pick, so you have a copy outside Claude too. On the free plan that uses your one free project export; [the backup guide](https://claudeprojectdownloader.com/blog/back-up-claude-projects-and-chats) covers keeping copies up to date.

## What doesn't carry over

- **Your chat history.** You can't continue a ChatGPT thread as a Claude thread. Claude starts a new chat that has read the old one.
- **Images and canvases.** Generated images and Canvas documents need to be saved separately. convoviz pulls canvases out as their own files.
- **Apps, connectors and GPTs.** Set them up again in Claude where an equivalent exists.
- **Nothing leaves ChatGPT.** Your ChatGPT account keeps everything until you delete it. Keep the export ZIP as a backup either way.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can you export ChatGPT to Claude?

Partly. Memory has a built-in import (Settings → Your Claude → Start import). Chats move as files you upload to a Claude project or chat, and ChatGPT projects are rebuilt by hand. Claude can't import conversation history, so old chats won't appear in your Claude sidebar.

### Can I import my ChatGPT chat history into Claude?

Not as history. Anthropic says Claude can't import conversation history from another AI provider. You can upload exported chats as files, and Claude reads them as reference and can continue the work from there.

### Can you export ChatGPT memory to Claude?

Yes. In Claude, open Settings → Your Claude (Settings → Memory in the older layout) and click Start import. Run the prompt it shows in ChatGPT, paste the answer back and click Add to memory. Anthropic calls memory import experimental and says Claude may drop personal details unrelated to work.

### How do I export a ChatGPT project to Claude?

Copy the project's instructions from Project settings, download its files from the project's sources list, and export the chats you need. Then create a Claude project, paste the instructions and upload the files and chats.

### How long does the ChatGPT data export take?

OpenAI says up to 7 days. The download link expires 24 hours after the email arrives, so download it right away. Business and Enterprise workspaces don't have self-service export; ask your workspace owner.

### Can Claude read the ChatGPT export ZIP?

Unzip it first. Claude's upload page lists JSON, TXT, HTML and PDF but not ZIP. The chats are in conversations.json, or numbered JSON files for large exports. Converting them to one Markdown file per chat and uploading only the ones you need works better than one huge file.
